As Mirena Lawsuits Mount, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on Reported Efforts to Increase Use of Mirena, Other IUDs
New York, New York (PRWEB) October 08, 2013 -- As Mirena lawsuit (http://www.themirenalawsuitcenter.com/) claims continue to mount in courts around the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that MedicalDaily.com recently reported that health organizations and private companies are trying to convince more women to use IUDs, including Mirena. According to the report, some women are resistant to IUDs due to a number of factors, including the fear of side effects.*
“The push to increase the use of IUDs, at least in the case of Mirena, is troubling, as we are representing a number of woman who allegedly suffered serious side effects after this IUD spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus. Women should be notified of the potential complications of Mirena, especially in light of the allegations made in a growing number of Mirena IUD lawsuits,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free Mirena IUD lawsuit evaluations to women who may have been harmed by this birth control device.
Mirena IUD Lawsuits
Court documents indicate that hundreds Mirena lawsuits are now pending in courts throughout the U.S., all of which allege that spontaneous migration of the IUD caused women to suffer uterine perforations, uterine embedment, ectopic pregnancy, infections, and scarring, that in some cases required surgical intervention to locate and remove the device. Plaintiffs accuse Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals of failing to provide adequate warnings regarding the possibility of spontaneous migration and related complications, and of exaggerating Mirena’s benefits while downplaying its risks.
According to court documents, at least 219 such claims have been filed in a multicounty litigation underway in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) An additional 159 Mirena IUD lawsuits involving similar allegations are also pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434.)
Data from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) show that since 2000, the agency has received more than 70,000 complaints involving the Mirena IUD, including instances of device dislocation and uterine perforation.** The agency also cited Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals for making misleading claims about the safety and efficacy of Mirena in a Warning Letter it issued to the company in 2009.
Women who were allegedly injured by Mirena following spontaneous migration of the IUD may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
