Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-sized business-to-consumer companies, comments on a recent mobile consumer survey and announces its best mobile marketing practices.
A recent survey conducted by Adobe asked more than 3,000 mobile users in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany about which mobile devices they use, how they interact with web sites, and what they want most out of their mobile experiences. As the experts at Numero Uno Web Solutions report, the survey found that consumers use their mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) to connect with businesses in a variety of ways; they also use different devices for different purposes. To better understand this lucrative market and engage customers, smaller businesses need to know who their mobile customers are, what mobile devices they use to access their site(s), and what their online expectations are.
“While smartphone use continues to dominate the mobile device industry, consumers are increasingly turning to tablets to visit and interact with web sites,” notes Andy Wu, business development manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “In fact, according to the survey, mobile users view 70% more pages per visit when browsing with a tablet compared to a smartphone. On top of that, 26% of tablet consumers use them for between one and four hours daily, while seven percent say they use them for more than five hours a day.”
“Still, smartphone users are more motivated than ever to use their mobile devices to make a purchase,” says Wu. “Roughly 85% of all on-the-go shoppers will use a smartphone to shop in 2013. Further, it is estimated that mobile shoppers will pump $38.4 billion in revenue, or 15% of e-commerce sales, into the economy from their mobile devices.”
In order to provide the best user experience and increase their target audience, Wu says, smaller businesses need to understand their customer’s perspectives and preferences. Because different mobile devices provide different experiences, brands need to make sure their mobile sites are easy to navigate and use across all devices and screen sizes.
“To build customer loyalty and improve conversion rates, brands must make a user’s online experience more mobile friendly. There are a large number of different mobile marketing strategies smaller businesses should consider,” Wu adds. “When it comes to mobile navigation, less is more. Online users don’t want to have to tap, drag, or swipe umpteen times to get to where they want to go; they want two or three touches at most. Brands need to streamline the design of their mobile sites to accommodate user preferences.”
According to Wu, because mobile users interact with web sites differently than those on a laptop or desktop do, brands need to design their sites accordingly. Rather than using interactions like mouse clicks and keyboard control, brands need to use a touch-driven interface, such as pinching, zooming, or tapping. To make sites easier to navigate, use simple, large buttons.
“Ultimately, the more positive a user feels toward their mobile experience, the more likely they are to connect with the brand, and the more loyal they will become,” Wu concludes.
