Modern Acupuncture™ Brings Non-pharmaceutical Pain Treatment to the Masses
Nation's First Acupuncture Franchise Celebrates Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine on Oct. 24
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Oct. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- October 24 marks the 16th annual Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) Day and, in celebration, Modern Acupuncture™ and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine® (NCCAOM) have joined forces to elevate acupuncture as a nonpharmaceutical pain-relief treatment option to reduce opioid addiction. The company's efforts to provide practical treatment replacements for painkillers, as well as combating pre-existing addiction through the use of acupuncture, are imperative as prescription drug misuse increases.
Shane Watson, 42, is in long term recovery from substance abuse issues now over six years sober. His abuse started in his youth; drugs and alcohol had devastating effects on his life, even landing him in jail. Now that he's a father, maintaining sobriety and optimal mental health is a daily priority. Since his recovery, he has developed serious lower back issues but cannot take any prescription pain killers. He turned to acupuncture.
"I wish I had known about acupuncture years ago. The sense of calm and the immediate pain relief I feel after a treatment has been a game changer," said Watson. "I can't describe how hard it is to live with a pain so debilitating that it makes it hard to do normal every day activities. I made a choice to stay clear of prescription pain killers but I had to do something to relieve the pain. A friend recommended acupuncture and after my first appointment, I immediately found relief."
Modern Acupuncture and NCCAOM's push for national awareness on behalf of AOM day comes as a call-to-action to lessen the public's dependence on opioids. Drugs, including opioids, are often prescribed to deal with a patient's pain as a first line of treatment; yet only 23 percent of patients with chronic pain found opioids to be a successful treatment choice. Acupuncture, an holistic form of treatment, has emerged in the U.S. as an evidence-based, safe, and cost- effective method to counter opioid addiction and pain associated with various other health ailments.
In recognition of AOM Day, Modern Acupuncture, in conjunction with NCCAOM, hope to promote this viable, nonpharmaceutical pain treatment option to help facilitate reversal of the opioid epidemic. At Modern Acupuncture, the development of specific treatment protocols to target pain conditions and opioid addiction have shown to be effective. The practice of acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system -- signals from the needle site are transmitted to the spinal cord to deactivate pain centers in the brain. Acupuncture has also been shown to improve the brain's sensitivity to opioids which increases pain control and decreases the clinical utility of the pills.
Three stages of treatment, identified as detoxification, rehabilitation and relapse prevention, are intended to provide long-term results for recovering opioid addicts. The first stage is designed to offset opioid tolerance though direct treatments targeting pain symptoms. The second rehabilitation induces relaxation and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. Finally, relapse prevention encourages sustainable pain relief and prevent symptoms of drug cravings.
"The medical profession is really picking up on the use of acupuncture as an alternative to opioids and using it more and more," said Dr. Charles Anderson, a John Hopkins and Harvard trained newborn intensive care physician with degrees from Princeton University, John Hopkins and Boston University. Dr. Anderson is also a regional developer of Modern Acupuncture because of his strong belief in acupuncture.
Modern Acupuncture combines a healing treatment that has been validated by thousands of years of practice with a modern, clean and spa-like environment, providing guests with a peaceful sanctuary that they can make part of their regular routine. The company offers both traditional and cosmetic acupuncture administered by licensed acupuncturists who utilize needle therapy on nodes to increase blood flow, but unlike typical acupuncture, does not require the removal of any clothing to access full-body health; treatments are performed on feet, legs, arms and face.
Modern Acupuncture employs NCCAOM Nationally Board-Certified Acupuncturists. As the only nationally recognized certification body in the United States for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, NCCAOM certification indicates to employers, patients and peers that one has met national standards for the safe and competent practice, as defined by the profession.
