Monster Energy’s Chris ‘The All American’ Weidman Chokes Out Kelvin Gastelum At UFC on Fox 25
After losing three consecutive fights the former UFC middleweight champion, Weidman, (14-3 MMA 10-3 UFC) was able to turn things around in front of his hometown crowd after he finished Gastelum by an arm-triangle choke at 3:45 of the third round, and had something to say to his fans and the naysayers.
“You, keep doubting me, people,” said Weidman. “I know Long Island ain’t doubting me. But these other people around the world keep doubting me. I dare you.”
A calm and composed Weidman was in control for most of the first round beating Gastelum in both standup with kicks and jabs, and a successful takedown with a deep Kimura, but Gastelum escaped and stole the round with a wicked left hand that put Weidman on the canvas. With just seconds to go Weidman grabbed Gastelum’s leg and was saved by the bell.
For the second round Weidman secured another takedown and took control of Gastelum’s back, outwrestling him and smothering him on the mat.
Gastelum came out strong in the third and let loose a series of punches, but Weidman remained patient and slowly picked apart Gastelum until he got him on the ground and worked into position for his winning arm triangle forcing Gastelum to tap and finish the fight in his hometown arena.
What’s next for Weidman now that he is back in the win column? He will need to at least one more top-level middleweight fight before he can reclaim his title. Perhaps a fight with Ronaldo Souza is in the cards? Regardless, Weidman can go into his next fight with less pressure now that he has finally redeemed himself after a three-fight losing streak.
