Monster Energy’s Troy Brosnan Defends His Title and Wins Crankworx Canadian Open Downhill
WHISTLER, British Columbia (PRWEB) August 21, 2018 -- Monster Energy’s Troy Brosnan (AUS) defended his title as Canadian Open champion this week at Crankworx last stop of the year in Whistler, Canada. The young Aussie bested his wining time from last year by nearly a second and narrowly took home the win over fellow Australian Monster Energy athlete Connor Fearon.
The Whistler Canadian Open track is known for being steep, short and fast. Riders plummet from the top of the Fitzsimmons chairlift to the bottom of the bike park in two minutes and 45 seconds over some of the most blown out, dusty conditions they will ride all year. Hiding the holes under the moon dust is a network of slippery roots in the most technical section of the track, aptly named the spaghetti chute. This year was made especially difficult due to heavy smoke from nearby forest fires that had blown in the day before, making it hard to breathe mid sprint.
Brosnan was excited to defend his title. "I’m super stoked to get the fourth in a row, said Brosnan. My run was really pinned at the top and then I rode it safe toward the bottom. The track had no dirt left on it just massive rock slabs and dust everywhere! The smoke was gnarly on my throat and lungs, coming into the finish it was pretty painful.”
Fearon secured his first big podium of the year against a stacked field and was excited to be right on Brosnan’s heels.
“I am really happy to put a good run down for the Canadian open with just a half second behind Troy,” said Fearon. "It’s a great result going into the last two races of the season. The track was really destroyed by the time we went. A lot of it had just turned to sand, but I really like riding tracks like this. The smoke was also really bad because of the brush fires in the area so I spent the day in the hotel and only went outside for practice and race runs. It just felt unhealthy being out there.”
Canada’s Mark Wallace was just off of the podium in 5th place and helped to cap off a great showing for Monster Energy athletes at this year’s Crankworx festival. Look for all three racers to be in La Bresse, France August 25-26 for World Cup finals, and then the World Championships take place in Lenzerheide,
Switzerland on September 4-9.
