As studies reveal worrying washroom statistics, company owners don’t seem to be aware of the damage being done to their business by not taking enough care of their facilities, says Simon Biggs, Operational Director of Monthind Clean.

What damage is still being done to businesses up and down the country who aren’t taking enough care of their washrooms?

Throughout the recession, companies across the UK looked at ways to cut costs; even the British Government put in place austerity measures that meant every public convenience came under financial scrutiny, ‘leading to a 40% drop in the number of public toilets,’ announced the British Toilet Association earlier this year.

Adding to this, a study carried out by revealed that it’s not just consumers’ habits that are affected by the cleanliness and maintenance of public washrooms, but 82% of staff thought their well-being at work would improve with better facilities.

It is to be expected that washrooms in restaurants may have one of the biggest impacts on consumer behaviour and opinion. And it’s worth noting that 72% of customers said they wouldn’t go back if the washroom is unpleasant, while 79% said they would share this information with friends, a figure likely to increase with the upsurge in online and social media activity.

“People have strong opinions when it comes to washroom cleanliness, and it is about more than just clean toilets and hand basins,” says Simon Biggs, Operational Director of Monthind Clean. “Hand dryers, air fresheners, sanitary disposal bins and baby changing facilities are some of the facilities people expect to see supplied as a matter of course these days.”

“The contract cleaning industry is said to be worth more than £10billion and with the extra demands on everyone’s purse strings companies are always looking to cut costs. But, if they fail to deliver even the basics, the adverse effect it could have on business is not worth considering,” Simon advises. “If a shop has dirty windows and buyers can’t see the goods on display they aren’t likely to enter let alone purchase, and the same can be said for catering establishments. Consumers are very concerned about hygiene, and one of the areas this is most obvious is in its customer conveniences. In contrast, outsourced cleaning costs very little compared to the long term damage poor facilities can do to the reputation of a business.”

Monthind Clean not only provides contract cleaning, window cleaning and specialist cleans, the East Anglian-based company provides some of the most competitively priced janitorial supplies in the region including toilet paper, paper towels, hand cleaning products and dispensers, baby changing facilities and nappy disposal bins. In addition the company also provides sanitary bins and vending machines, waste management and recycling services as well as clinical waste disposal. In essence, everything people want to find available in public conveniences and washrooms.
