Presentations at 2013 Joint Statistical Meetings to Highlight Use of Minitab Software in the Classroom
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (PRWEB) July 22, 2013 -- For educators attending the 2013 Joint Statistical Meetings in Montréal, Québec, Canada, two sessions will highlight how statistical and process improvement software can be used to teach Six Sigma in the classroom, featuring examples from Minitab software.
Professors rely on statistical software to help them teach data-driven decision making and quantitative process improvement tactics, such as Six Sigma, to their engineering students. Minitab Inc., the leading provider of software for statistics education and quality improvement, recognizes the challenges faced by educators and students, and designed Minitab Statistical Software to help instructors teach and students learn.
Minitab is used at more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world because the software makes it easy for students to understand and apply statistics to real world scenarios. Quality Companion, Minitab’s process improvement software, contains “soft” tools, such as process mapping, and form templates Six Sigma students need to plan and execute process improvement projects.
Dr. Diane Evans, Six Sigma black belt and associate professor of mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, will present Reducing Food Waste through Six Sigma with Minitab's Quality Companion on Wednesday, August 7, at 9:30 a.m. at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, located at 1001, place Jean-Paul-Riopelle, Montréal.
Evans will discuss how her students applied Six Sigma methodology and used Quality Companion software to reduce food waste at the Rose-Hulman campus dining center.
“The food waste project gave students the chance to complete a Six Sigma project from start to finish and put the skills they were learning in class to use in the real world,” Evans says. “An even greater benefit of the project was the opportunity to further the sustainability goals of the college.”
In addition, Cory Heid, a student studying applied mathematics at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., will present How Many Licks to the Tootsie Roll Center of a Tootsie Pop? at 2:00 p.m. on August 7.
Heid’s session will attempt to answer this elusive question and will cover his methods for determining factors affecting the number of licks and how he designed his experiment for human subjects. His preliminary results, using Minitab for statistical analysis, were given at the 2013 Joint Mathematics Meeting in January. Since then, a refined model was developed and updated results will be shared with JSM attendees.
Minitab representatives will be on hand throughout the Joint Statistical Meetings, as well as during the event’s expo, August 4 – 7 at the Palas de congrès de Montréal. Attendees are invited to visit the Minitab booth (#500) to learn more about the company’s products and services, which also include training, statistical mentoring and free technical support. In addition, both Heid and Evans will be available at the Minitab booth to discuss their presentations as part of Minitab’s ‘Meet the Presenters’ program. Join Heid from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and meet with Evans from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 5.
Meeting participants can connect with Minitab during the gathering and keep up-to-date with event happenings on Twitter and Facebook.
