Moving Your New College Grad into His or Her First Apartment: Tips from The Libman Company

ARCOLA, Ill., May 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) projects that 1.9 million students will graduate with bachelor's degrees this year. While some graduates will be moving back home or pursuing secondary degrees, many will find themselves living on their own for the very first time in their lives.
The Libman Company, a 123-year old American manufacturer of household and commercial cleaning products, offers parents some moving tips to help get their new grad settled and ready to face the future in their new place.
1. Take photos
Before moving in, be sure to take a photo of all the rooms in the apartment and save them until your grad moves out. These photos can help in case the landlord wants to charge for repairs or refuses to give back the deposit.
2. Clean before you start
Before you start unpacking those boxes, give the new apartment a good and thorough cleaning. Even if the landlord may have cleaned it after the old tenant moved out, it's still a good idea to give everything a wipe down. Libman offers an array of mops and other cleaning products to help with every cleaning need.
3. Save money on packing materials
No need to spend money and packing materials. Wrap breakables (dishes, glasses, etc.) in clothing to save on bubble wrap, and use socks to wrap stemware or figurines.
4. Label boxes by room
In addition to labeling what's inside the boxes, add what room they'll be going in. Use duct tape to color code boxes by room (orange for kitchen, blue for bathroom, etc.).
5. Protect glass
To help prevent cracking mirrors and glass in picture frames during the move, place an "X" in painter's tape on the surface. This can help absorb some of the impact if you drop the item.
6. Pack a first-night box
Pack a labeled box with all of your grad's first-night essentials (toothbrush, paper towels, linens, clothes, PJs, medicine, etc.) to prevent an aimless search through all of the boxes when it's time for bed.
