First Annual Food Drive by Movoto Real Estate Collects Enough Food for More Than 9500 Meals
Fresno, CA (PRWEB) November 27, 2016 -- Movoto Real Estate partnered with Grocery Outlet on November 12 and 13 to hold its first annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. All food and cash donations went to the Community Food Bank to be distributed to those in need this Thanksgiving season.
“We were blown away by the results. It was really inspiring to see just how generous the Fresno and Clovis community could be. We had people handing us cans as we were shutting down and driving away!” said Julie Fulcher, Movoto’s Fresno Area Manager.
After two days, Movoto had collected 2,386 pounds of food and $1,082 in cash donations, enough to generate 9,560 meals for the hungry in Fresno and Clovis and far surpassing their expectations. “We really didn’t know what to expect for our first food drive and were awed by just how many people were donating. When the Community Food Bank told us that most companies raise about 200 pounds of food, that really put our food drive success in perspective,” said Cynthia Countouris, Movoto’s Head of Marketing. “Roughly two thousand 2000 people participated.”
“It was truly humbling to hear some people’s stories about times when they were in need. These were people who clearly didn’t have a lot, but were still finding room to give back. The entire Fresno and Clovis community came together to help. Whether it was people who were financially stable or people who admitted they were struggling themselves, people gave generously,” Countouris continued.
Fresno County is one of the top 10 producers of the nation’s fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products. Yet, its child food insecurity rate is 29.2%, higher than the rate in California (22.9%) and the US overall (20.9%). In a 2014 Fresno Hunger Count survey, they found that of over 42,000 people surveyed, a whopping 51% of households reported experiencing food shortages at least one month per year.
“We’re grateful for partners like Movoto and Grocery Outlet. Thanks to their commitment to giving back to the local community, a lot of families will have food on their tables this Thanksgiving,” said Kym Dildine, Chief Administrative Officer at Community Food Bank. “The generosity of our community supporters lets Community Food Bank continue to make an impact against hunger in Fresno and Clovis.”
“People aren’t aware that the residents of Fresno, where most of America gets its food, are struggling to put food on their own tables,” said Fulcher. “We’re living in a time where all we hear about is how divided we are, but the unity and sense of camaraderie in Fresno and Clovis are alive and well. It was really uplifting to see just how much people from all walks of life were willing to band together to help one another out.”
