Le French Book is dedicated to bringing commercial fiction from France to a wider audience, starting with translations of top mysteries and thrillers. After successfully launching four series and a standalone novel in English, the publisher is adding new authors for the coming year.
“We want to broaden the spectrum of entertaining reads we are making available to readers,” publisher Anne Trager says. “French mystery and thriller writers are a very creative bunch, and our goal is to bring their work in all its diversity to a wider audience with our translations.”
They will start with Shadow Ritual by Eric Giacometti and Jacques Ravenne, the beginning of a nine-book series that has sold over two million copies and is already translated into eighteen languages. The series is a heady mix of Freemasons, secret societies, action, history and strong characters.
Two prominent French authors write the series. Jacques Ravenne is a literary scholar who has also written a biography of the Marquis de Sade and edited his letters. He loves to explore the hidden side of major historical events. Eric Giacometti was an investigative reporter for a major French daily newspaper. He’s known for uncovering a number of high-profile scandals and for his investigation into the Freemasons.
Shadow Ritual is scheduled for release in early 2015, and the second in the series later in the year.
Art world mysteries
“We are trying something new introducing a debut author,” Anne Trager says about signing on Anne-Laure Thiéblement for two mysteries set in the art world. Thiéblement has been called “an author to follow” in France. Her female sleuth, Marion Spicer, navigates in a white-collar world of priceless inheritance, museum masterpieces, auctions, pillaging, theft and fencing. Thiéblemont is a gem-specialist and art reporter known for her investigations into art and gem trafficking. She lives between Marseille and Paris. Her mysteries are packed with information and twists and turns, with interesting breaks from genre codes.
Hard-boiled African mystery
Le French Book has also signed on a title by Laurent Guillaume, a multiple-award-winning French writer and former cop. In law enforcement, he worked anti-gang, narcotics, financial crimes, and served in Mali as advisor to the local police. Le French Book will be translating his latest novel, which is set in Mali. The main character, a former—and outcast—French cop living in Bamako and working as a PI, is a classic hard-boiled hero, haunted by a dark past, keen on drink. He gets a sexy, somewhat dubious client and must take on particularly tough bad guys. Guillaume gives the story a modern twist and sets it in Africa, where a rather ordinary drug mule case turns into a dangerous confrontation with tradition and corruption.
