National Association of Professional Women Inducts Maria Peña-Guerrero, Postdoctoral Fellow, Space Telescope Science Inst., into its 2015-16 VIP Woman of the Year Circle
Garden City, NY (PRWEB) May 12, 2015 -- The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) honors Maria A. Peña-Guerrero as a 2015-2016 inductee into its VIP Woman of the Year Circle. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in the astronomical community. As a Postdoctoral Fellow in Astrophysics, Ms. Peña-Guerrero’s hard work and expertise includes the chemical composition of star-forming regions, analysis of all data taken with the telescope that is space or ground-based, writing code with Python, and writing the findings of data in papers and presentations for a wide range of audiences.
“I am passionate about understanding. The process of building knowledge to the point of finally getting to the reason of the problem is something I absolutely enjoy. I am very fortunate to be able to do this for a living,” says Ms. Peña-Guerrero. Ms. Peña-Guerrero’s motivation and determination has led her to the Space Telescope Science Institute, which specializes in maintaining the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions, archiving data and making data available for the astronomical community.
With her extensive experience in astronomy, Ms. Peña-Guerrero believes it is crucial to know the job she is doing is contributing to improve society in a more direct way than astrophysics. She is continually working toward finding the balance between the long-standing need to give back to society and her desire to understand.
