I have the ability to pare the issue down to its bare bones, and then build a solution around that, adding layers as the tangential issues are addressed.

NAPW honors Kathy J. Kolich, J.D., C.P.A., as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in energy law. As the largest networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
“I was looking for an in-house job and Ohio Edison (predecessor to FirstEnergy) was one of the few companies willing to hire attorneys fresh out of law school. I swore I was only going to stay a year and then get ‘a real job.’ But every day was interesting, different and challenging, which kept me coming back for more,” says Ms. Kolich, Attorney and CPA.
That was nearly 30 years ago. Recently retired from her job at FirstEnergy, Ms. Kolich is now focusing on her own law practice and a consulting firm, K2 Energy Advisors, LLC. As President and CEO, she will use her excellent communication skills and keen ability for strategic thinking and analysis and apply her expansive knowledge of corporate law and litigation and the energy industry to provide targeted solutions for clients.
“I have the ability to pare the issue down to its bare bones, and then build a solution around that, adding layers as the tangential issues are addressed,” says Ms. Kolich, who is dedicated to ensuring her law practice and consulting firm consistently exceed clients’ expectations. "I also provide expert advice on energy regulation compliance and strategies and provide legal advice pertaining to corporate litigation, energy law and regulation and general business matters.”
While she admits to being competitive and relishing a win in court, Ms. Kolich finds it equally rewarding when her actions positively impact an individual’s life. “I once won a $300 million case and also helped two Amish guys develop a proposal for a project for Marriott. The two guys were awarded the contract on the same day the opinion came out in my $300 million case,” she says. “Guess which one gave me more satisfaction?”
An entrepreneur at heart, Ms. Kolich is looking forward to growing her businesses. "As a single mom raising a son, I needed the financial stability that a Fortune 200 company could provide," she says. "Now that my son is off to college and I am retiring from my job with FirstEnergy, I finally get the chance to resurrect my practice and consulting company and devote the time necessary to grow both.”
NAPW’s mission is to provide an exclusive, highly advanced networking forum to successful women executives, professionals and entrepreneurs where they can aspire, connect and achieve.
