NAPW honors Susan L. Sumerlin as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Sumerlin is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in baking and catering. As the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
“I’ve always loved baking desserts. I find in very therapeutic; it’s my creative outlet!” says Ms. Sumerlin, Chef and Owner of Just Desserts by Susan, LLC.
A self-taught baker, Ms. Sumerlin has been creating delectable pies, cakes and more for family and friends for years. Many of the recipes she uses have been handed down from her mother, grandmother and aunts, although she admits to tweaking them a bit to “make them my own.” Using her test notebook, Ms. Sumerlin writes down the recipes she uses, adding her own comments as well as those of her “tasters” so that she can perfect the recipe. Ms. Sumerlin says her culinary specialty is rustic, fruit-filled pies. “I make my own crust and use fresh, organic ingredients. I support local farmers and I try to keep everything as local and fresh as possible,” she says.
Currently, Just Desserts By Susan is an online business, but Ms. Sumerlin hopes to soon realize her dream of hitting the road and expanding her business in another direction. “I want to raise enough money to purchase a food truck where I can sell my dessert products at local events. Food trucks are getting to be very popular. I’m seeing them around here more and more and I’m really excited about having one of my own!” she adds.
NAPW’s mission is to provide an exclusive, highly advanced networking forum to successful women executives, professionals and entrepreneurs where they can aspire, connect and achieve.
