National Association of Professional Women selects Gloria Fillmon for her outstanding leadership and commitment within her profession

I am responsible for ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations as they relate to the origination, brokering and servicing of mortgage loans by our company.

The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) honors Gloria Fillmon as a 2017-2018 inductee into its VIP Woman of the Year Circle. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in financial services. NAPW is the nation’s leading networking organization exclusively for professional women, boasting more than 850,000 members, a thriving eChapter and over 200 operating Local Chapters.

“I’m pleased to welcome Gloria into this exceptional group of professional women,” said NAPW President Star Jones. “Her knowledge and experience in her industry are valuable assets to her company and community.”

Although she did not have the opportunity to go to college due to personal circumstances, Ms. Fillmon knew she wanted a career, not simply a job. Armed only with confidence and perseverance—and no prior knowledge of banking—she applied for a job as a clerk at a local savings and loan in downtown Dallas. Ms. Fillmon assured them what she lacked in experience she would make up for in hard work. “They hired me on the spot,” she recalled. “My goal was to double my salary within five years and I doubled it within 18 months.”

In the industry for more than 20 years, Ms. Fillmon has been in her current position as Chief Compliance and Risk Officer at American Pacific Mortgage Corporation for two years. “I am responsible for ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations as they relate to the origination, brokering and servicing of mortgage loans by our company,” she said. Ms. Fillmon is also responsible for the company’s Enterprise Risk Management and she is an Executive Sponsor for American Paci c’s Diversity and Inclusion Program. “This includes diversity with obtaining vendors, our hiring practices and community outreach programs to create more diversity in our mortgage loan applicants,” she added.

Throughout her successful career, Ms. Fillmon has demonstrated expansive knowledge of all applicable state and federal regulations and their practical applications. “I also possess strong management and leadership skills that allow me to chair our risk committees, manage our compliance group of 30 plus, and regularly present concise compliance and risk management updates to our board of directors,” she said. Although she admits it can be challenging determining how regulators interpret various laws that may be vague and lack guidance, she adheres to the regulators’ opinions “as they are the ones that regulate and examine our company.”

Ms. Fillmon’s experience with developing and training a comprehensive fair lending and diversity program has been a very positive aspect of her career, she said. “Another rewarding aspect is the excellent relationship and reputation I have developed with regulators and other industry leaders throughout my years in the business,” she noted. Looking forward to her retirement someday, Ms. Fillmon plans to open an exclusive boutique-style bed and breakfast in the US Virgin Islands, probably on the Island of St. Croix.
