NAPW honors Elise Pettus as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Pettus is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in business. As the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
“After muddling my way through a two-year separation and subsequent divorce, I decided to start an organization that would provide meaningful support and information to women going through this challenging and complicated transition,” says Ms. Pettus, Founder and Editorial Director of Untied.net.
Five years ago, when Ms. Pettus’ marriage was falling apart, she assumed she would be able to find answers to her questions, such as what kind of lawyer she would need or how to help her children through the difficult process, on the internet. To her surprise, that was not the case. It was this sense of being alone with no place to turn to for help that inspired Ms. Pettus, a successful journalist, to start Untied.net, an organization that provides online and in-person support and resources for empowering women facing divorce.
“I feel passionate about the fact that while divorce is supremely difficult, it can also be a powerful catalyst, a great opportunity to redirect our lives in a way that makes us truly happy,” says Ms. Pettus. On her website (and others), she provides informative blogs that address topics relevant to divorced or separated women. Ms. Pettus also organizes and runs live monthly events in the New York City region, hosting professionals who offer insight into important issues such as legal, parenting, real estate, dating and much more.
Ms. Pettus looks forward to expanding Untied.net’s reach beyond Manhattan. “There is great value in creating a solid local network, but going forward I want to find ways to translate the magic that happens at our live events to a wider base,” she says.
