NAPW honors Carol A. Stormer, OT, NBCOT, CEAS, as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Stormer is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in home healthcare. As the largest networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
“I love the community-based and preventative aspects of home healthcare,” says Ms. Stormer, a Home Health Occupational Therapist at LHC Group Therapist. “I have knowledge of injury-preventative wellness and I try to apply that to what I do.”
Ms. Stormer was attending veterinarian school when she realized she had severe allergies to many animals. She had to make a career switch and decided to pursue becoming an Occupational Therapist (OT) after taking classes in that area. “OT has been around since WWI and became even more popular during WWII and its been growing ever since,” she said. “The field has changed quite a lot.”
Seeing between four and six patients a day, Ms. Stormer travels to patients' homes, most of who have recently been released from the hospital, and helps them to re-adapt to their environment. “I work with them to improve their skills, to get them back into their communities,” says Ms. Stormer, who patiently instructs her patients in home safety, daily living activities, adaptive equipment use, pain management, exercise programs, stress management and wellness.
An effective communicator and manager with exceptional leadership abilities, Ms. Stormer is considering pursuing a graduate degree in organizational leadership and/or fundamental medicine. She is the Founder of the Pacific Dragonboat Association, USA, a nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to promote the sport of dragon boat racing and foster national and international dragon boat competition.
