National Association of Professional Women Announces Janne Ackerman, B.S., M.S., M.S., Director of Engineering, Retired, a 2015 Professional Woman of the Year
Garden City, NY (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- NAPW honors Janne Ackerman as a 2015 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Ackerman is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in engineering. As the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and over 200 Local Chapters.
“I worked for almost 37 years as an Engineer at Texas Instruments,” says Ms. Ackerman. Recently retired, she began her career at Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) in 1978 as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer. In 1997, Ms. Ackerman joined Raytheon (which had acquired TI’s Defense Systems and Electronics Group).
Always interested in math, Ms. Ackerman majored in mathematics, taking as many computer courses as she could. Along the way, she realized computer science was what really interested her. She started her career as a Computer Programmer, and with the help of a mentor, eventually transitioned to software development, and ultimately, engineering. Ms. Ackerman also obtained her Master’s in Software Engineering.
“It was unusual back then for women to be engineers; there were a lot less then,” she recalls. “Young women today are still fighting upstream but it’s a better work/ life balance.” Aware of the many challenges young women face in her field, Ms. Ackerman is an advocate for STEM education, and she and her husband are actively involved with BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) a national robotics program.
Ms. Ackerman is a licensed pilot and enjoys restoring old airplanes. “My husband and I started the North Texas Flying Club in 1999,” she says. “I've served as Treasurer / CFO since its inception.” Although she enjoys retirement, Ms. Ackerman is considering taking a part-time / consulting position and perhaps serving on a board.
