On the first Tuesday in August, communities all across the US have events staged by law enforcement, anti-crime and anti-drug groups helped make local residents more aware on how they can help fight crime. This is the National Night Out Against Crime, organized by the National Association of Town Watch. In all, more than 37 million people participated in this year’s National Night Out, including a robust group in Placerville, California.

The Placerville event started at MORE, Mother Lode Rehabilitation Enterprises, Inc, an organization that supports the disabled in the area. From that kick-off, representatives fanned out to twenty block parties and individual events all over town.

Staff from the residential drug rehabilitation center in town, Narconon Vista Bay, were on hand at the main location to provide youth and families with drug education materials. Each young person was invited to sign a drug-free pledge board, pledging their commitment to stay away from drugs and alcohol abuse. Many young people added their signatures that night.

"We were delighted to offer our services to make this event more successful," said Alex Matthews of Narconon Vista Bay. “We will be presenting this pledge board to Mayor Wendy Thomas next week as a token of our support in creating a drug-free community."

This year’s event also served as to signal the start of Project 365, a cooperative effort to clean up Benham Park and make it family-friendly again. While there have been recent improvements, public drunkenness and drug sales have made this an unfriendly place.

"At Narconon, we are fighting drug abuse and addiction every day and every night with our residential rehab program," added Matthews "We are very proud to add our efforts to the drive to make Placerville a safe place to live and raise families."
