GILBERT, Ariz., Nov. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Added sugar is a major contributor to obesity and diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, with sugar-laden drinks contributing to much of the added sugar in the diet of Americans. During November, which is National Diabetes Month, Americans are urged to watch consumption of added sugar and be aware of the warning signs for diabetes.
Of all foods and beverages, sugar-laden drinks including soda, fruit juice, sweet tea, and energy drinks probably add more sugar to our diets than anything else Americans consume. According to Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a typical 20-ounce soda contains 15-18 teaspoons of sugar and more than 240 calories. The American Heart Association recommends a daily added sugar limit of no more than 9 teaspoons/36 grams/150 calories for men, and 6 teaspoons/25 grams/100 calories for women. All children 5 and younger should avoid drinking flavored milks, toddler formulas, plant-based non-dairy milk, caffeinated beverages and sugar- and low-calorie sweetened beverages.
"SweetLeaf® Stevia Sweetener delivers delicious sweet taste without the calories, carbohydrates and artificial ingredients found in sugar because it's made from natural stevia leaf extract," said Carol May, CEO of Wisdom Natural Brands, maker of the SweetLeaf family of products. "Switching to great-tasting, plant-based SweetLeaf in foods, beverages and recipes will reduce daily added sugars intake."
In 1991, in response to the troubling rise of diabetes across the globe, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) designated Nov. 14 as World Diabetes Day. In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/61/225, also designating Nov. 14 as World Diabetes Day. Because diabetes awareness is so important, the entire month of November soon became designated as National Diabetes Month.
According to the Mayo Clinic, people with prediabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and could develop cardiovascular disease. Prediabetes is diagnosed when an unusually high blood sugar content occurs, often due to insulin resistance, which means the body isn't using insulin properly.
While symptoms vary, according to the American Diabetes Association, the common warning signs of diabetes may include frequent urination, thirst or hunger; extreme fatigue; blurry vision; cuts or bruises that are slow to heal; unexplained weight loss (type 1 diabetes); tingling, pain or numbness in the hands or feet (type 2 diabetes).
Reducing carbohydrates—grain products such as rice, white bread, and russet potatoes, along with sodas, juices and sweets—helps in lowering blood sugars in the body. The American Diabetes Association recommends superfoods including beans; dark green, leafy vegetables; sweet potatoes; tomatoes; and fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids for a healthy diet that may prevent or reduce the symptoms.
The SweetLeaf family of products adds award-winning taste without the negative health effects of added dietary sugars and excessive calories.
