Our members are strong, intelligent women who play various roles within construction, including executive level decision makers; we want to share our experiences to encourage other women who are interested in construction to build their careers.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 07, 2013
Rand Group Manager Laurie Jimenez was named President of the Houston Chapter of National Association of Women in Construction this past October.
Rand Group prides itself on employing the best in the business, and the accomplishment of Mrs. Jimenez is further testament to their success in doing so. Additionally, Rand Group is dedicated to contributing positively to the success of the local Houston community, and they believe NAWIC-Houston is a part of that. With a focus on the construction sector, Rand Group knows the importance of representing the talented women who make up a significant part of the industry.
As a past board member, treasurer and long-time member of NAWIC, Jimenez couples her knowledge and experience of the construction sector with her passion for helping women in business network, learn and grow. Being named President of NAWIC-Houston for the 2013-2014 year is testament to her hard work and dedication to the Association, and demonstrates her understanding of the importance of a place for likeminded business women to work together.
"People don’t automatically think of women when they think about the construction sector, and at NAWIC we’re working to change that. We offer women in construction professional opportunities, along with mentorship and education. Our members are strong, intelligent women who play various roles within construction, including executive level decision makers; we want to share our experiences to encourage other women who are interested in construction to build their careers. NAWIC cultivates the minds and talents of women from all backgrounds to help them build and grow both professionally and personally, and I am thrilled to be part of an association of this caliber. I look forward to helping more women get involved in construction, and listening to the thoughts and ideas of our Chapter members. Being appointed President of the Houston Chapter of NAWIC is certainly an honor and I know we will have a significant impact in 2014," says Laurie Jimenez, Manager, Construction at Rand Group.
NAWIC works toward helping the construction industry remain competitive by encouraging the hiring and training of women, and working toward pay equity and safety for those already in the industry.
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. It was founded in 1953 by 16 women working in the construction industry. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction.
The owner of Gregory Edwards, a Houston HVAC contractor, encouraged his female employees to attend a meeting for women in the construction industry. The first organizational meeting of what was to become the Houston Chapter was held in the home of Florence Harrison. In addition to Florence, Grace Dockal, Patsy Minor, Frances Galvin, Carrie Ann Marquette, Jane Harris, Ouida Rouse and Ann Judice attended this meeting. These eight ladies called their friends, and 44 women signed the charter to establish the Houston chapter on June 21, 1956.
Grace Dockal still pays her dues in 2013.
