Author New White’s new novel, “More Than a Vignette” is about an artist dedicated to his art who is caught up in a web of murder and mystery by the circumstances of his learning art. The book follows young Vincent, a struggling artist, who is constantly in trouble for putting up graffiti in school. When his grandfather discovered his artistic skills, he encourages Vincent to have some home schooling with Miss Marlow.

Vincent’s art education was complicated by his art teacher herself, a woman named Miss Marlow, who gives him a mysterious pendant as a gift. The central theme for Nev White’s book is the struggling artist. Vincent (perhaps named after the quintessential struggling artist Vincent van Gogh), accepts the struggle his art brings – but an intriguing undercurrent of ironic humor and a surprise element in Miss Marlow’s pendant makes this book exciting reading.

When Vincent’s best friend Tommy (also an artist) dies in a road accident, he moves out of university and secures a job at a gallery called The Phoenix, where he is in charge of paintings and artifacts. One time while Vincent was renovating a picture, he discovers a letter containing a list of stolen artifacts and the places where they are supposed to be found. This begins a grand detective-novel like adventure a lá Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon” but with a humorous streak that breaks struggling artist stereotypes. Vincent is strong enough to face murder and mystery, travel to Europe and Egypt to find out about the list (which also includes his pendant), and defend his beloved art.

The heirloom pendant is a gift from his art teacher Miss Marlow that her father gave her when searching for artifacts many years earlier in Egypt. It is the find of the document that gives rise to search for Hitler’s hidden European wartime treasure. Vincent is truly entangled in a conspiracy of crime, greed and mystical superstition. “More Than a Vignette”, Nev White’s novel has migrated across genres, a full-blown adventure, an exciting romance of art, and sees the molding of a hero into an artist and man of the world. As Vincent proceeds to prove himself equal to the challenges of solving the mystery of Miss Marlow’s pendant, there are no ironies in the book’s successful charms – readers will be glued to it until it’s thrilling finale.
