New DSP Magnet Program Tackles Direct Support Professionals Crisis
Blitz Media Design's new DSP Magnet Program helps providers attract and retain the Direct Support Professionals needed to help people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. The proven program helps providers reduce recruitment budgets, improve retention, and develop a long-term culture to keep staff engaged.
DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Blitz Media Design's new DSP Magnet program is the result of the company's last several years of working with providers and outreach to experts and influencers in intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Direct Support Professionals, or DSPs, are critical to helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities lead fulfilling and productive lives. Unfortunately, with a national turnover rate of 45% and a growing need, there is a DSP crisis as most providers have many open positions to fill and are burning out current staff who must cover extra shifts.
The DSP Magnet Program helps providers deal with this crisis in three phases:
- Attracting people who have the mindset of great DSPs
- Retention programs that start from Day One
- Helping build a positive culture to motivate and support staff
The new program can help providers avoid critical and costly mistakes in recruitment. It also can have very fast results, as Sarah Koenig of Path Forward Kentucky discovered, "After one meeting with Blitz and making the recommended improvements, we had 173 applicants in 48 hours!"
The program also identifies issues in retention. New employee onboarding programs focus on necessary training but may overlook opportunities to help increase employee retention. Blitz has developed simple, little or no cost methods to help providers to apply proven retention techniques into the onboarding process and beyond.
The program also addresses longer-term culture issues to help keep staff motivated and supported. Many DSPs work in situations without coworkers, and developing and maintaining a warm, welcoming culture can counteract feelings of isolation.
