Hickerson considers the book as an important part of her recovery from depression, containing unresolved grief and forgiveness, and her thoughts on suicide. Ultimately, she tells how she was able to bring herself “back from the darkness into light.”

“Wet Hands and Ginger Hair” is a call for an open discussion about depression, suicide and other mental health issues. As someone who has gone through hard times, Hickerson aims to offer inspiration to others facing the same challenges.

“There is hope at the end of a very dark tunnel,” she says. “It takes a lot of time to recover; I was depressed for two and a half years and it’s about the same amount of time to feel somewhere near ‘normal.’”
