New Survey: 65 Percent of Consumers Have a Second Income

American Consumer Credit Counseling survey found that consumers are using a second income to supplement expenses and pay off credit cards, among other things.

The cost of living is steadily increasing and not all salaries can cover these expenses, which is why more consumers are getting second incomes – even if it’s only a couple hours a month.

Sixty-five percent of consumers have a second income, according to a new survey by national nonprofit American Consumer Credit Counseling. For most of the respondents (70 percent), their second income comes from a part-time job followed by freelance services (16 percent), gig economy, such as driving for Uber, (12 percent), and selling unused or unwanted items (2 percent).

“Having a second income is a great way for consumers to supplement expenses, save for a big purchase or have some extra spending money,” said Steve Trumble, President and CEO of American Consumer Credit Counseling. “The cost of living is steadily increasing and not all salaries can cover these expenses, which is why more consumers are getting second incomes – even if it’s only a couple hours a month.”

When asked why they have a second income, 43 percent of respondents say it’s to supplement the expenses they can’t afford with their salary from their full-time job. Other respondents say they have a second income to pay off their credit card (22 percent), for extra spending money (14 percent), for a big purchase, such as a car, house or vacation, (6 percent) or to pay off student loans (2 percent).

On average, 74 percent of respondents with a second income say they make up to $200 per week, while 10 percent make over $500 per week. According to a survey by Bankrate, side hustlers make on average $686 per month and can make over $8,200 a year.
