Diabetics Require Special Dental Care, New Albany Dentist Says
New Albany, IN (PRWEB) May 20, 2014 -- Calling attention to a national report released earlier this month that said type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children up to 19 years old increased significantly between 2001 and 2009; Louisville family cosmetic dentist Dr. Ronald Receveur is reminding those with diabetes to pay attention to their special dental needs.
“Diabetes affects every aspect of someone’s life, and dental care is no exception,” Dr. Receveur said. “There are special considerations for your mouth that you have to be aware of for good dental health.”
For instance, diabetics are two to three times more likely to develop gum disease than those without the condition. Gum disease causes the gums to become tender, swell and bleed. It also causes bad breath. If left untreated, gum disease leads to tooth loss.
If a diabetic person gets gum disease, it usually is more severe than in non-diabetics. And research shows gum disease has a negative impact on glycemic control, which is bad for someone trying to control his or her diabetes.
Persons with diabetes also are more likely to suffer from burning mouth syndrome and dry mouth. Those with diabetes should record which foods and drinks give them burning mouth sensation, and try chewing sugar-free gum and drinking water to avoid dry mouth.
Because of the dangers of gum disease and its associated problems, Dr. Receveur encourages those with the condition to schedule regular appointments with the dentist.
