Louisville Family Cosmetic Dentist Urges Parents, Other Adults to Use Fluoride
New Albany, IN (PRWEB) May 13, 2014 -- With many households still awash in Easter candy, Louisville dentist Dr. Ronald Receveur is urging parents not to skimp on using fluoride.
Acids formed by sugars and bacteria in the mouth attack tooth enamel. Adding more sugar, such as in candy, speeds up the process.
“Fluoride is a mineral that you get in many foods and water,” Dr. Receveur said. “Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks.”
In children 6 and under, the body incorporates fluoride into developing permanent teeth.
Fluoride is important in adults, too, Dr. Receveur said. Fluoride helps tooth enamel absorb other helpful minerals such as calcium. It also disrupts acid production in adult teeth, helping prevent tooth decay.
But food and water aren’t the only ways to apply fluoride to teeth. Over the counter toothpastes and mouthwashes can deliver low amounts of fluoride.
Dentists, such as Dr. Receveur, can deliver higher levels of fluoride as a varnish, foam or gel. Dentists also may prescribe fluoride dietary supplements.
Some people are more at risk for needing additional fluoride, as well.
Those who have dry mouth caused by diseases, medication and radiation treatments; gum disease; a history of cavities; and crowns, bridges or braces may be at greater risk of decay and therefore benefit from additional fluoride.
