Professor Mary Haras Receives Nurse Educator Fellowship
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 24, 2013 -- Saint Xavier University is proud to announce that Mary Haras, an Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing, has been awarded a Nurse Educator Fellowship from the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
The Nurse Educator Fellowship program is designed to encourage the retention of highly qualified nursing faculty at institutions of higher education that award nursing degrees. The fellowships augment recipients’ salaries and help finance professional development and continuing education endeavors. Haras will receive $9,061, which she will use to help complete her Ph.D. in Nursing at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University, where she is focusing on how nephrology nurses handle advance care planning.
“The support from the Illinois Board of Higher Education validates the importance of end-of-life research for persons with chronic kidney disease,” Haras said. “It is critically important that nurses are comfortable participating in advance care planning discussions so that patients’ end-of-life wishes are known, respected and followed. Receiving this award will enable me to complete my dissertation research on this important issue.”
Haras earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Rush University in Chicago and her MS/Adult Nurse Practitioner degree from North Park University in Chicago. She also holds an MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management. She joined SXU’s School of Nursing as an Assistant Professorial Lecturer in 2007. Today, as an assistant professor on a tenure track, she teaches in the undergraduate classroom and clinical settings, and in the online Master of Science in Nursing Clinical Leadership track. She continues to work as a nurse practitioner and serves as American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) Project Director for the America Kidney Foundation Medicare Kidney Disease Education Project.
