Cancer is a life-changing disease. The lifestyle adjustments and the treatments involved affect not just patients but their loved ones as well. How can a child possibly understand the changes that follow a cancer diagnosis? This is what author Nicole Cable Scoubes thought to herself when she was diagnosed with cancer. She decided to write a story as a way to explain what she was going through to her young children. Her new book, “The Daddy Haircut,” is that story.
Scoubes had her first battle with cancer when she was just 12 years old. She was diagnosed a second time when she was thirty and she felt that the second diagnosis was much different because she now had a husband and two very small daughters who looked up to her for strength. She decided to look for a book that could help her explain her situation to her young children and when she could not find one, she wrote one herself. Titled “The Daddy Haircut,” Scoubes’ new book is a trove of inspiration to cancer patients, especially parents who have young children, and a reminder for them that they do not have to fight this battle alone:
“Cancer should not be so devastating that your children pay the price, there is always help around you and people that love you… Cancer is such a horrible disease, and yet in such horrible days it is good to know that families can laugh and love and find strength in each other and that is what my book is all about.”
Accompanied by vibrant illustrations by London artist Joel Cable and told with equal measures of honesty, humor and tender understanding, “The Daddy Haircut” is a heartwarming starting place for cancer patients who want to share their experience to family members.
