Gruve Technologies Awarded NIH Grant to Create and Validate a Device to Measure Calories Burned Through NEAT Activity

The grant is in conjunction with Mayo Clinic and Dr. James Levine. The grant is intended to take a scientific standard and apply it, in a scalable fashion, to populations for management of health and wellness. The NIH provides grants to support the advancement of its mission to enhance health, extend healthy life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.
Leading obesity expert, James Levine, M.D., and the Mayo Clinic Active Life Research Team spent 10 years conducting medical research that found the lack of movement in daily life is the largest contributing factor to the obesity epidemic. Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, known as NEAT focuses on the daily calories one burns while doing normal, non-exercise activity. These activities include such things as walking to meetings, pacing while on the phone, cleaning the house, shopping, or standing while you talk to a friend. NEAT, to put it simply, is one of the major factors in weight reduction in an individual. Increasing NEAT activity is tied to reducing obesity risk factors including percent body fat, Body Mass Index (BMI), cholesterol, the HDL/LDL ratio, and plasma triglycerides.
