Intel Orchestrator has the potential to be a genuine breakthrough that will drastically reduce the high cost of HPC software.

Nor-Tech, an innovative developer and builder of affordable high-performance computer clusters, is close to rolling out clusters integrated with Intel’s groundbreaking Orchestrator platform. Intel® HPC Orchestrator is a licensed, value-add version of OpenHPC that will be supported by Intel and Nor-Tech. Intel is planning to officially launch it during Super Computing 2016 (SC16) Nov. 13-18 in Salt Lake City.

As an Intel Platinum Level Technology Partner and an Authorized Integrator, Nor-Tech has been serving as a technical contributor and a beta test site for HPC Orchestrator. Nor-Tech President and CEO David Bollig said, “We are extremely enthusiastic about Orchestrator. It has the potential to be a genuine breakthrough that will drastically reduce the high cost of HPC software. It was our privilege to work alongside the talented engineers at Intel on this project.”

Key aspects of HPC Orchestrator include:

  •     It simplifies integration, validation, and maintenance of the HPC system software stack.
  •     It is a key essential element of the Intel Scalable System Framework (Intel SSF).
  •     It simplifies the installation, management, and ongoing maintenance of an HPC system.
  •     It is a comprehensive system software platform that allows OEMs, ISVs, developers, system administrators, and end users to:
  •     Manage new workloads such as machine learning (ML), Big Data, and high- performance data analysis (HPDA).
  •     Leverage a reliable, modular, and customizable solution that reduces the complexity of building and maintaining an HPC system.
  •     Incorporate a pre-integrated and pre-tested solution to take the complexity out of integrating individual components and validating the software stack-- allowing for more time to focus on innovative solutions for new workloads.
  •     Utilize an updated, maintained, and Intel-supported solution, so organizations can adopt new hardware technologies faster and with reduced risk.

Intel HPC Orchestrator is designed to simplify HPC system software implementation and maintenance. To that end, features and capabilities include:

  •     Compute Node Boot Types: diskless and diskful
  •     Provisioning Methods:

o    Bare metal installation
o    Warewulf base
o    Image-based provisioning
o    PXE-based provisioning
o    Templated installation scripts
o    Editable configuration input file

  •     Hierarchical structure, multiple development environment support

o    Multiple MPI families
o    Common scientific libraries included for multiple MPI/compiler combinations

  •     Includes integrated administrative tools and flexible development environment
  •     Utilizes common Linux update mechanisms (e.g. YUM, Zypper)

“We are looking forward to the SC16 rollout of HPC Orchestrator,” Bollig said. “We encourage everyone to stop by our Kiosk in the Intel Pavilion to learn more about our HPC Clusters and workstations and the benefits of integrating this leading-edge platform.”
