DrugRisk Update: Judge Greenlights First NuvaRing Lawsuit For Trial
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- The birth control safety advocates at DrugRisk.com are announcing updated news for women using the contraceptive NuvaRing. A federal judge recently denied attempts by the manufacturer to dismiss a lawsuit alleging NuvaRing caused blood clots, allowing trials to proceed in October*.
Health experts have linked contraceptives like NuvaRing to higher risks of blood clots than traditional birth control pills. Last year, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study finding vaginal ring contraceptives could relate to a 2.5 to 3-fold increased risk of blood clots**.
So far, 1,296 women or families have filed a NuvaRing lawsuit alleging blood clots, an increase of 11% in recent months***. Cases have been consolidated in a special federal court in Missouri. The formal case is known as In re: NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, No. 08-md-1964, JPML, Eastern District Missouri.
Now, the resource center has learned that U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel, who is overseeing the litigation, recently denied a motion filed by Merck subsidiary Organon USA to dismiss the case of Marianne Prather alleging DVT and pulmonary embolism from the device*. The first trial for these lawsuits has been scheduled to start in October***.
