Auto Accident Lawyer David Perecman Weighs in on Woman Killed After Being Struck by Truck and Car in Brooklyn
New York, New York (PRWEB) January 02, 2014 -- A woman in her 20s died after being hit by two vehicles at a Brooklyn intersection known for speeding, reported NBC News (12.29.13). Speeding was not confirmed to be the cause of this accident, however, it is one of the most common factors contributing to traffic accidents, said Attorney at Law David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm.
The victim was hit by a BMW and an Isuzu box truck at McGuinness Boulevard and Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint, according to NBC News. Investigators were not clear on which vehicle hit the woman first at the time the news report was published.
According to NBC News, area residents said they “have seen drivers going recklessly at the intersection” because it is a straightaway and there have been a “lot of obvious mishaps."
"It seems like there were safety improvements that could have and should have been done before this fatal accident," said Perecman, an auto accident lawyer for over 30 years. “The tragedy would be compounded if anyone else is hurt at that intersection when accidents could be prevented.”
Statistics from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA DOT HS 811 751) show that speeding was a contributing factor in approximately 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 2011, and 9,944 individuals died in speeding-related crashes. There were 338 speeding-related traffic fatalities in New York.
Being a pedestrian can also be dangerous. According to the NHTSA, pedestrians were one of the few groups of road users in the United States to experience an increase in fatalities in 2011 with 4,432 deaths. The NHTSA (DOT-VNTSC-NHTSA-02-02) also said that going straight just prior to striking a pedestrian was reported in about 89.2% of fatal pedestrian crashes.
"Each time there is an accident, it reinforces that more needs to be done to increase pedestrian safety," said Perecman.
For those who are in an accident where a speeding driver is at fault, damages that may be recovered include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If you or a loved one is involved in a vehicular accident, contact the auto accident attorneys at The Perecman Firm at 212-977-7033.
