New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer David Perecman Condemns Alleged Hate Crime Assault of Three in Union Square
New York, New York (PRWEB) September 11, 2013 -- The New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes unit is investigating an incident in which after a man allegedly punched and knocked out a 69-year-old man in Union Square. LaShawn Marten, 31, had allegedly declared he would attack the first white person he came across before the attack, said NBC News (9.7.13). Hate crime can affect anyone, understands David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York’s civil rights violation law firms.
“Hate crimes victims do not have to be members of a minority, or others who are usually considered to be vulnerable,” said Perecman.
Marten also reportedly punched two other white people, a 48-year-old and an 18-year-old.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there were 3,645 victims of racially motivated hate crimes in 2011. Of that number, 16.3 percent were victims of an anti-white bias.
According to the NYPD, the suspect, who is black, caused serious injuries. The 69-year-old victim was in a coma after the attack, NBC reported. The attack appeared to be totally random.
“Bias incidents and hate crimes have no place in New York,” said Perecman.
