The mere presence of people who are different should not provoke anyone to attack them. People should understand that differences should be embraced.
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 29, 2013
An interracial married couple said they were attacked outside a bar in Long Island City, New York by attackers who used racial and homophobic slurs, reported NY1 (8.26.13). Civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm in New York, condemns all hate crimes and supports the rights of all New York citizens.
“The mere presence of people who are different should not provoke anyone to attack them. People should understand that differences should be embraced,” said Perecman. “New York was built upon a foundation of inclusion and diversity.”
Billie and Jacob James-Vogel said they and a gay friend were attacked after leaving the bar. In addition to the derogatory slurs aimed at their group, the couple claimed the attackers also physically assaulted them, reported NY1.
The New York City Police Department's Hate Crimes unit is investigating the beating, said NY1.
Interracial marriage in the United States has more than doubled in the last 20 years, according to a 2012 Pew Research Center Study. In New York, 14.3 percent of marriages were interracial.
“As long as both people in a couple are happy, in love, and respect each other little else should matter,” said Perecman, a civil rights violation attorney for over 30 years.
