Personal Injury Lawyer David Perecman Joins New York Department of Buildings in Balcony Warnings Following Balcony Collapse Death
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 06, 2013 -- Inspectors from the New York Department of Buildings and personal injury lawyer David Perecman are warning tenants to stay off their balconies at the apartment building where Jennifer Rosoff, 35, fell to her death. She was leaning on the railing of her 17th floor balcony when it suddenly gave way, reported ABC News.
The apartment building is 400 East 57th Street.
“In any building, if there is something that appears suspicious about the stability of a balcony or the balcony’s railing, avoid the area until a professional is able to determine the full scale of the problem,” said Perecman.
According to ABC News (8.2.13), Rosoff was on a date when she went on her balcony for a cigarette and it gave way. The building department is investigating the accident and trying to determine why the balcony railing collapsed when she leaned on it.
A photo of the balcony where the accident occurred shows the top two metal railings bent down in a V-shape. Buildings officials took part of the broken railing to examine how it could have given way, ABC News reported. The Manhattan high-rise building was built before World War II.
Often, balcony falls result in severe injuries or fatalities.
“Property owners have an obligation to ensure that their building is safe for tenants and their visitors. Unfortunately, there are many incidents of negligence that cause preventable accidents,” said Perecman.
