New York Personal Injury Lawyer from The Perecman Firm Welcomes News, Macy’s Escalator Accident Victim Released From Hospital
New York, New York (PRWEB) November 28, 2013 -- Personal injury lawyer David Perecman welcomes the news reported by CBS News (11.21.13) that an 11-year old girl, who was the victim of an escalator accident, was released from the hospital. The girl’s toes and lower leg needed to be reconstructed after they were mangled on a Macy’s escalator.
Juliana Valdez was in the hospital for three months following the accident inside of the Macy’s at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J. The accident occurred when Valdez’s shoe got stuck in the escalator. The girl was on the escalator pressing her foot up against a smooth-faced riser, when it was “sucked into a gap between two stairs,” said CBS News.
Valdez faces many more years of physical therapy, CBS News reported.
“Children are one of the most at-risk groups involved in incidents on escalators,” said Perecman.
In 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated there were approximately 11,000 escalator related injuries (Release Number: 08-264). Feet were the body parts most likely to become entrapped.
Personal injury lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand that one of the biggest escalator hazards is the area where the moving steps meet the side. Escalator accidents often result in serious injuries, including bone fractures, head injuries, mangled appendages, and amputations of fingers or toes.
Perecman, a personal injury lawyer in New York for over 30 years, supports escalator safety education.
“Escalators pose dangers that are significant, but often unrecognized. Riders need to be aware of the danger,” said Perecman.
National Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week is observed each year during the second full week of November. This year it was November 10-16.
