New York Personal Injury Lawyer Weighs in on Department of Labor’s Report on Nonfatal Workplace Injuries and Illnesses in 2012
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 07, 2014 -- Private industry employers in New York reported approximately 146,000 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2012, reported [NBC News (1.30.14). David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, reviewed the figures from the U.S. Labor Department.
According to the data, there were 2.5 reported cases for every 100 full-time workers. These numbers show a significant decrease in the private industry rate of total recordable cases over the year. New York, seven other states, and the District of Columbia were able to say that the rates went down, said NBC News.
State and local government workers in New York reported close to 69,000 injury and illness cases in 2012, NBC News reported. That translates to a rate of 7 cases per 100 full-time workers. Across the United States, the rate was 5.6.
In New York there were four categories that accounted for 29 percent of the occupational illnesses, said the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These were hearing loss, skin disorders, respiratory conditions, and poisoning.
“Apparently, employers need to do more to provide their employees with a workplace that does not have serious hazards. If safety and health problems are found to exist, employers must correct them,” said Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer for over 30 years.
Service-providing industries accounted for 83 percent of the injuries and illnesses. Two industry sectors with a high number of incidents were education and health services; and trade, transportation, and utilities. They each reported over 40,000 incidents, said the BLS.
Local government workers reported close to 78 percent of the injuries and illnesses in New York's public sector, NBC News reported.
Each year, the U.S. Labor Department helps with a survey of occupational injuries and illnesses. The purpose of the survey is to collect, compile, analyze and publish non-fatal, work-related injuries and illnesses for both the private and public employment sectors in New York State.
