Object Management Group Issues DDS-TSN Request for Proposals
Allows DDS infrastructures be deployed on, and leverage, TSN-enabled networks
NEEDHAM, Mass., Oct. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, issued a DDS-TSN RFP seeking submissions to define rules for mapping Data-Distribution Service™ features onto TSN concepts in order to support the design, deployment and execution of DDS systems over TSN networks in a standardized fashion. By putting DDS on top of TSN, engineers can leverage the infrastructure of DDS with the advanced networking properties of TSN to create a powerful distributed data-centric integration framework with high reliability and availability properties.
According to the report, "Time Sensitive Networking Market By Component, By Application, By Component, Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2013-2023," published by TechSciResearch, the global time sensitive networking market is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 53% from 2018-2023, due in part to increasing demand for industrial IoT (IoT) and industrial automation applications.
Both members and non-members of OMG can participate in the process by submitting a Letter of Intent by March 20, 2019. In order to become a submitter, individually or as part of a submission team, companies must become members of OMG by the initial submission deadline of November 11, 2019.
DDS is a family of standards from OMG used in large-scale, mission-critical systems that depend on secure, real-time data exchange in complex distributed networks, such as aerospace and autonomous vehicles. It is fundamentally designed to work over unreliable transports, such as UDP or a wireless network, without requiring central servers for peer-to-peer communications or multicasting. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a collection of standards developed by the TSN task group of the IEEE 802.1 working group that enables deterministic, highly-reliable communication on standard Ethernet. With its support for different types of QoS, a single TSN network infrastructure can be used to communicate mission-critical data with real-time delivery requirements side-by-side with non-critical data.

An OMG DDS-TSN standard will allow the creation of interoperable solutions and tooling, truly unlocking the power of TSN for Industrial Internet applications."
