With the first day of summer (June 21) less than a month away, it’s likely that many Californians will start to plan their summer moving plans. However, with summer comes hotter months, so there are some important things we want to keep in mind when planning a residential move during the summer time. Since OCD Moving Services have been serving the Bay Area as top movers of choice for more than five years, they’ve helped plenty of families move in the dead of summer. So they’re sharing a few tips on how to prepare for your summer move.

Reserve your moving company well in advance
Summer is often a very popular time for moves. With the kids out of school, or headed off to college, there’s usually not a more perfect time to make a change. However, with summer being a prime season for moving, local movers will also book up, and fast. Be sure to hire your local moving company in advance. A moving company you can trust is going to be one of the most important aspects of your move. In addition, the faster you can hire the moving company the faster you can get started packing.

Practice safe moving in the heat
On moving day, if it’s a scorcher, make sure you have plenty of water on hand for you and your movers. Even if the weather is colder, you can still work up a sweat. And when we work up a sweat, we’re technically losing water so you better drink up. Make sure you add water, hydrating drinks, and light snacks to your moving checklist if moving during the summer.

Make sure you take extra care of your kids and pets
When your house is full of moving boxes, equipment, and movers, there’s not going to be many places for your children and pets to take shelter. In addition, the doors are going to be open for extended periods of time which will make it hard to keep the house cool if you’re running the air-conditioning. Also, window units and external air conditioning units might have already been removed from the home. It might be a better decision to have your kids stay with family members or friends – perhaps ones who have a pool? You may also want to consider putting your animals in pet daycare on hot moving days so they stay cool and occupied.

Consider your movers on moving day
Your movers will love you if you leave extra water, drinks, and cold damp towels for them on moving day. You might not be their only move for the day. They might have other houses to help move. So in that case, it’s even more of a reason to set them up with cool beverages and towels so they don’t overheat. Also, doing so keeps your movers (and your stuff) safe, hydrated and more effective.

Be careful when packing heat-sensitive objects
When you’re moving in the summer, you’re going to have to battle your way through the very high temperatures outside. For that reason, you’ll want to protect any heat-sensitive items from the summer heat. There are specific items that won’t do well in very high temperatures inside a moving truck. Here are a few of those items to keep in mind when packing.

Sensitive Electronics
You’ll want to transport smaller electronic devices in your own car because you’ll have much more control over the temperature with being able to run the air conditioner. These small appliances can include:
Stereos
Laptops
Tablets
Smartphones
Small TVs

In addition, when you can, pack the electronic equipment in its original packaging to ensure it’s protected and there’s enough air circulation.

DVDs and CDS
We understand that many of us have moved away from using CDs and DVDs these days with the advent of MP3s; however, some of us still have large collections of music and movies, including vinyl, that we are moving with. Media disks such as these can’t handle the summer heat. It’s best to keep them in their original cases. For extra protection, place any disks inside individual vinyl sleeves. If you have any family movies or important information on these CDs, make sure you back them up either online or on an external hard drive.

Candles
If you can avoid it, it’s a good idea to not take any candles with you. They will definitely melt during the summer move, especially wax candles.

Food that is Perishable
As a reminder, perishable food items are not allowed on moving trucks, especially in the summer. Before you move, use up your food or give away any leftovers.

Plants
Plants are another item that moving companies won’t often agree to move because they likely won’t survive the move.
