In “Karamba” (published by Trafford Publishing) Olukayode Oyenekan tells the story of a truck driver, AIDS patient and health education advocate who, together with his friend and physician, strives to teach a largely ignorant population about his illness. It is a deeply layered, moving tale of finding hope and redemption in the midst of overwhelming odds.

Dr. Cinzano is a government employed doctor who champions the fight against exploitation and corruption by government officials who take advantage of resources donated to take care of AIDS patients by diversion and other means. What he does not know was that he is taking on a deeply entrenched cabal who has made a fortune out of perfecting this kind of perfidy over many years of occupying privileged positions in government. He is pushed out of his job, but he remained undaunted as he fought from outside, and the struggle took on a life of its own.

Oyenekan draws from his experience as a trained journalist and his involvement in non-profit development work in writing the story of Karamba. His years in development work gave him a rare insider’s look into the stark realities surrounding AIDS management. The resulting novel is a realistic and poignant look into the lives of people affected by one of the greatest epidemics to hit the modern world.
