Olusesan Odetunde debuts with a rarity of an oeuvre titled “The Unbroken Vessel,” a brilliantly written story of love across race and class. With well-developed characters heightening its excellent and convincing storyline, the author is certain to make a name in romance discussion circles as he covers the sensitive topic of cross-cultural marriage and multi-ethnic tensions.

Set against the backdrop of Nigeria and London, this riveting love story begins with Lagos-born Andrew’s first journey overseas. He totes with him well-meant advice: not to stay too long in the white man’s country, his mother’s contribution; and not to marry a foreign girl, his travelling companion’s personally felt plea. These things he keeps in mind but soon overlooks.

Andrew quickly discovers that London is not Lagos. He befriends a local named John, who later introduces him to his parents and his sister, Eve. To not marry a foreign girl was easy if not for this encounter. But such was not the case for Andrew. That on top of the fact that he is the type of guy who will marry the right girl for him, foreign or not. He woos the Londoner and, soon enough, walks with her down the aisle. When it is necessary for Andrew to return to his homeland, husband and wife prepare themselves and their children for whatever life will throw at them in Nigeria.

This story is not only designed to delight and entertain, but one with a kernel of truth that is difficult to miss. Like words written in red ink, “The Unbroken Vessel” demonstrates that love knows no color, culture or creed — the universal meaning and message of true love.
