An all-video online news platform launches today in Austin to provide internet users with a social news network which is breaking the norms in the news reporting industry. OMIRO relies on the site’s members to generate original content, called NEWSRIPs (news reports in person,) to share informative reports, opinion or discussion pieces, and event coverage. The goal is to provide a platform for personal perspectives on issues that matter most to professionals, freelance journalists, online bloggers, filmmakers and OMIRO users, which will lead to the world’s most interactive and candid news source.
OMIRO will launch with 100 original videos covering a wide range of topics. These NEWSRIPs have all been shot by OMIRO users and will serve as a launchpad for future OMIRO reporters. Contracts will be posted for stories that are in demand, and a cash payment will be delivered to quality videos that are produced on the subject. All contracted NEWSRIPs have a stated deadline and work on a first come, first served basis.
“The idea is for NEWSRIPs to begin seeding the news cycle with issues that other news networks either haven’t discovered or have jettisoned,” said OMIRO co-founder Dusty Allen. “Our goal is to make the concept of the NEWSRIP an important function of the press, where issues of importance start from the users. We want to hear from journalists, filmmakers, students, and people with diverse backgrounds. We also want to hear from professionals who are experts in their field and are knowledgeable about how current events and political bills impact our daily lives.”
Videos submitted to the site may be of users filming themselves, traditional reporter and camera operator style, allegorical skits, or in any manner the user/creator chooses. The idea is to show that news can be reported from anywhere in any fashion. Submissions should be no longer than two minutes and should be all original content. Soon the website will launch direct video responses that can be made at specific points in a NEWSRIP, in which an icon will appear to notify other viewers when a video response was made. These responses will be limited to 30 seconds each.
“News is now a creative, interactive, and mobile social media,” said Allen. “OMIRO will deliver videos that not only entertain and engage users, but inform them about important topics based on personal perspectives.”

OMIRO, founded in 2013, is a group of people who have banded together to promote news stories outside the mainstream. It publishes user-generated videos called NEWSRIPs that present current events and news to an audience seeking an innovative presentation of the issues that they face everyday.
