Holiday compensation specialists On Holiday Claims have witnessed a recent rise in claims relating to food poisoning from holidaymakers returning from Egypt.

Tens of thousands of pounds have been paid out on all manner of sickness-related claims - and in one particularly severe case, one claimant received a payout of £750,000 after suffering kidney failure (see full details below).

Just some of the cases On Holiday Claims have handled include:

  •     £13,500 for a party of three who contracted gastroenteritis at the Tropicana Azure Club;
  •     Over £10,000 for a family who tested positive for salmonella after staying at Red Sea Holiday Village;
  •     A Hull woman who tested negative for salmonella but still won a compensation payout.

Incidents do not have to be widespread or have lasting consequences in order to potentially qualify for a claim; even isolated, individual cases of food poisoning or other illness might have a case for compensation, if discomfort was experienced or enjoyment of the holiday was adversely affected.

Farhan Hussain, speaking for On Holiday Claims, said: "If we suffer an accident or injury at work, many of us are now well aware that we may be entitled to claim for compensation; however, many holidaymakers still think of 'Egyptian tummy' as an unfortunate but acceptable result of eating foreign food.

"Food poisoning should not be acceptable, and those affected by it have every right to seek recompense from those responsible. As some of our more extreme cases show, the outcomes in the worst-case scenarios can be very severe indeed."

In one of the worst cases seen by On Holiday Claims, 46-year-old Carl Riley became infected with E.coli, which developed into the blood disorder Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome.

This in turn led to kidney failure, leaving Mr Riley in need of dialysis for the rest of his life, or a liver and kidney transplant.

On Holiday Claims were able to win a compensation payout of £750,000 for Mr Riley, helping to offset the loss of earnings he is likely to suffer due to the fatigue he now experiences.
