LUZERN, Switzerland – Author Victoria Huang Song offers a great travel guide to European countries in her new publication, “One Year in Brittany” (published by Xlibris). This book is not only a journal but also a deep communication of the Western and Eastern cultures seen through the eyes of a teenager.
Brittany is not France; that is what Victoria, the modern big-city Chinese girl who was raised up internationally, found out when she had arrived at her destination for her exchange year. The tiny town with nothing inside, the narrow-minded people and the boring countryside life did not appear acceptable for the ambitious girl. However, after struggling too hard that she had screwed up her relationship with her host family and her friends and her life in France was finally a mess, she took beautiful trips alone around Europe. Will she successfully learn about life?
Based on the author’s own experiences as an exchange student, this book explores cultural conflicts and teenage life while giving readers a glimpse into the cultural region in the Northwest of France.
She has this to say about her life-changing stay in Europe:
“It’s not rare to become an exchange student these days, but there are so few people who shared their experience. To me, my exchange year was really inspiring that it has changed me into another person, and this is a common result for everyone who has went through an exchange year. I would like to encourage other teenagers to do an exchange year, not for learning the language, but for the life in ten months.”
