Numero Uno Web Solutions (http://www.NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing Internet marketing firm that caters to medium- and large-sized business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) companies, is weighing in on a recent study that shows that a brand's online reputation is more important than the price of its products or services.
“The vast majority of companies with a web site work hard to enhance their online reputation and brand loyalty. That’s because online shopping, or e-commerce, is growing rapidly in Canada, with web sales up 11.5% year-over-year in 2013 at $136 billion,” says Ara Libarian, General Manager of Sales at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “Yet incredibly, only 13% of Canadian businesses actually use the Internet to sell their products or services.” (Source: “Digital technology and Internet use, 2013,” Statistics Canada web site, June 11, 2014; http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/140611/dq140611a-eng.htm.)
Libarian explains that Canadian businesses that choose to forgo using the Internet could be intentionally ignoring the vast majority of their potential consumers. Not only does the ease of the Internet encourage online shopping, but it also has a direct impact on the way people shop offline. That’s because many consumers, before they even visit a traditional brick-and-mortar store, will consult the Internet first to compare prices and brands.
According to a recent study, in-store behaviour is strongly influenced by online comparisons and that brand reputation is more important than price. When setting in-store prices or offering other kinds of guarantees (such as price-matching) retailers should focus more on their online reputations than necessarily offering the lowest prices. “Regardless of whether a brand has a traditional store or only provides its products and services exclusively online, it’s important to have a strong online reputation,” Libarian adds. “One way a brand can enhance its online profile is to have positive testimonials; not only will it leave a good impression, but it will encourage consumers to visit a site or store as well.
“Other ways to increase brand awareness, build brand loyalty, enhance a business' online reputation, and rank higher on search engines like Google is to have a well-designed web site with detailed and original content, including product descriptions and frequently updated blogs and articles. Because online users engage with content differently, it’s important to also use images, infographics, videos, and other media,” Libarian concludes. “Businesses that want to enhance their online reputation and build brand loyalty need to create content that readers find valuable and want to share with others.”
