overstockArt.com, the popular online art gallery, is introducing an entirely new product line just in time for the holidays. The series of ornaments features handmade reproductions of some of the most popular paintings in the retailer’s online gallery. Featured art includes Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night', 'Branches of an Almond Tree' and Gustav Klimt's magnum opus 'The Kiss'.
Each ornament begins as a crystal clear hand-blown glass bulb, with one small opening less than half an inch wide. It is through this hole that an artist then gets to work painting a masterpiece on the inside. It can take years of practice to acquire the skills, coordination, patience, and precision necessary to succeed at making art in this way. The small scale demands fine brushwork, confined by the limited mobility afforded by the bulb’s aperture. As though it weren’t difficult enough, the artist must then recreate one of the world’s most renowned works of art in reverse in order for it to display appropriately from the outside.
This is the art form of ‘Neihua’, which means inner painting. It originated in China during the Qing Dynasty almost 200 years ago. The technique was associated at first with painting small bottles that would be treasured for purely aesthetic purposes or used for trade and gifts between wealthy individuals.
Befitting the great care with which they are made, each ornament is nestled inside of a red keepsake box. Featuring a luxurious velveteen exterior and a comfortably plush satin interior, the ornaments will remain in prime condition for storage and display for years to come. They may be shown hung for the holidays, by their patinated bronze fastener and verdigris cord, or year-round to add a touch of hand-crafted elegance to a space.
The CEO of overstockArt.com David Sasson is pleased with the new line, saying, “The glass ornaments adorned by famous works of art are the perfect extension of the overstockArt brand that was instilled on great masters imagery with hand painted artistry." Sasson reflects on the reason overstockArt.com was created and adds, “overstockArt.com is more than an online art gallery, it is a gateway that allows people to access the essence of these timeless works of art that is so uplifting and reviving to the human spirit. We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the personal inspiration these artists provide no matter what their budget.”
