New Study on Parenting Reveals the Benefits of Alcohol Treatment in Family Stability
(PRWEB) April 30, 2014 -- A study published March 15th in the research journal Addictive Behaviors showed an interesting correlation between the conflict within a family and the father’s treatment for alcohol dependence.
In short, families with a father who struggled with alcohol dependency displayed more conflict than those who had no issues with alcohol. Seeking treatment for alcohol dependence also helped alleviate the amount of conflict within a family unit.
Survey questions were asked of 67 families in Massachusetts with a male partner or spouse seeking treatment for alcohol dependence. The children in each family ranged from 4 to 16 years of age.
Researchers administered questions before treatment began, six months after treatment, and one full year following treatment to determine how families measured up after the father quit alcohol.
The survey participants who were dealing with alcohol-related issues were compared with 78 other couples with children who did not have alcohol issues. Both survey groups filled out the same questionnaire.
Conflict was measured by examining categories like finances, as well as verbal & physical hostility. Families with fathers who later relapsed also scored higher on metrics of conflict.
“Alcohol can be a disruptive force in the lives of family,” said Pax Prentiss CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “At Passages, our experience shows that individuals with untreated past trauma are particularly at risk for becoming dependent on substances like alcohol.”

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two drug & alcohol abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
