FDA Approves New Antidote to Treat Overdose
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) May 06, 2014 -- On April 3rd, the Food and Drug Administration announced its approval of Evzio, an antidote to opiate overdose. The medication was designed to be easily administered by family members or caregivers via an auto-injector. Evzio contains naloxone, which has proven valuable in the fight to save people from heroin and opiate overdose.
An overdose of opiates is generally characterized by lower rates of respiration, a drop in pulse, loss of consciousness and even death. The growing prevalence of opiates has resulted in more calls for enhanced access to treatment. Ezvio is intended to be an emergency antidote in the case of overdose, not a substitute for professional medical care.
“Better access to treatment is important because it saves lives,” said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “The treatment team at Passages treats & heals the underlying issues associated with dependence, allowing our clients to return to their daily lives, drug and alcohol free.”
Overdoses (OD) have steadily increased over the last ten years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cases of OD have been driven more recently by prescription medications like Vicodin or Oxycontin.
Evzio is meant to be injected into either the muscle or skin and when the device is turned on, a recorded voice provides instructions that explain how to administer the medicine. More than 16,000 people died in 2010 due to opioid-related ODs.

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two alcohol & drug abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
