New Study Reveals Alarming Risks for Hard Drug Users
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2014 -- The February 2014 issue of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment published an analysis of data on mortality risks of users of cocaine and heroin. That analysis showed users of those substances to be at 14 times higher risk of fatality, compared to the general population.
The study was conducted in Spain and included a population of more than 8,800 participants observed between 1997 and 2007. Users in the study sought treatment in either Madrid or Barcelona and were 15 to 49 years of age.
Another group of 11,900 study participants, who only consumed cocaine, showed a fatality risk rate 5 times higher than the general population.
Men in the study were also 1.5 times more likely to die than women, among heroin users. Among cocaine users of the same age, it was women, rather than men, who showed a higher likelihood of excess mortality (8.6 times higher than the general population in women versus 3.5 times, in men).
Some of the specific risk factors in the study included mental disorders, personality traits, and social conditions surrounding drug dependence. Similar studies in other countries revealed a similar range of elevated risks.
“This research clearly shows that drug use is unsafe and can lead to fatality. Addiction is often associated with underlying psychological disorders,” said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “For individuals who have made the choice to end their dependence on substances, our treatment team has helped our clients to return to their daily lives, drug and alcohol free.”

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two alcohol & drug abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
