Crystal Meth Epidemic Reported from Inside North Korea
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2013 -- An August 20th blog post in the Wall Street Journal detailed findings form a report that examined meth use in the northern area of North Korea. The report was one of the first of its kind that attempted to assemble meaningful statistics about North Korean drug use.
Methamphetamine, better known as crystal meth, began production in the embattled country when the export of opium became difficult.
Known locally as “bingdu,” meth started as a social drug for the upper economic echelon of society and steadily trickled downward. The report, entitled “A New Face of North Korean Drug Use: Upsurge in Methamphetamine Abuse Across the Northern Area of North Korea,” covered the various stages of meth’s rise in the country, beginning in 2004 with high-level officials and entrepreneurs, eventually trickling down to young people and students by 2009.
The author of the report stated that nearly every adult in the northern part of the country has tried the substance and estimated that 40-50% remain addicted.
“At Passages, our international clientele makes sure we stay aware of global trends in drug dependency,” said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “We welcome anyone from around the world once they decide that they’re ready to start fresh and begin treatment. One of the most important aspects of our treatment method is getting to the underlying issues that keep people depended on drugs, so they can heal their addiction and move forward with their lives. We also make sure that our clientele have access to their own cell phones and computers, to make their treatment process as smooth as possible.”

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
